Round Building in the Acropolis of Sparta
The so-called Round Building dominates the southeastern side of the archaeological site. It is a circular structure built with huge blocks and smaller stones.
During the 2nd century A.D., a colossal arcade was built in contact with the eastern part of the Round Building. In its preserved form, it is probably a repair work of the Roman times, an ancient building important for the life of Sparta.
The dominant position of the building at the entrance of the administrative and religious centre of the ancient city, as well as its strong structure with massive stones, are the main reasons why the monument was in operation from the time it was founded in the Archaic period, until the Byzantine years, changing usage and serving different needs per era.
