Spartan Studies Society-Anniversary event
Spread the word
The members of the Spartan Studies Society invite you to the modest anniversary event they are organising for the fifty (50) years since the Restoration of the Republic on Saturday, November 16th, 2024, at 07:00 p.m., at the Spiritual Centre of Sparta. The event is entitled November 17th 1973 - November 17th 2024: Citizenship and Struggles for Democracy in the Digital Age—Lessons from the Past—Visions for the Future.
The purpose of the meeting is to inform the public with validity about what exactly happened during the tumultuous period of the Seven Years and, above all, to reflect on what is the role of the citizen at the "dawn" of the 4th Industrial Revolution, what dangers lurk for the Republic (among others from the manipulation of the M.M.E.) and what means we have at our disposal to act/react to new, emerging forms of "juntas".
Instead of typical academic presentations, the aim is to discuss our present and future and "hear" the thoughts, hopes and concerns of our fellow citizens, young and old.
In this effort, three important personalities will be present as interlocutors: Dr Telis Tympas, Professor of the History of Technology at the Department of History & Philosophy of Science of the University of Athens and Director of the Master's Program "Science, Technology, Society", Mr. Dimitris Papachristos, author, columnist and radio producer, the "voice" of Polytechnic Uprising in 1973 and Mr. Pavlos Antonopoulos, teacher and member of the students present in the riots. They will also be joined by fighters who lived through the events of the Polytechnic, as well as our fellow citizens who experienced the oppression of the Dictatorship. Spartan Historian Mr. Nikolaos Ismirnioglou will moderate the debate.
Additionally, on Saturday, November 16th, 2024, at 11:30 a.m., a History Workshop for children on the subject of the Polytechnic will be held at the "Koukouvaya for curious minds" Bookstore (115, Vrasidou str., Sparta), with the help of the teacher who experienced the events from the inside, Mr. Pavlos Antonopoulos.
