"From our own oil to our own soap"/Action on the occasion of World Olive Day

In the context of the celebration of World Olive Day (26/11), the Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation, in collaboration with the Laboratory Centre of Natural Sciences (EKFE) of Laconia, presents a demonstration of the regular educational program of saponification on Sunday, November 30th, 2025 (11:00), at the Museum of Olive and Greek Oil, in Sparta.
Eleni Paloumba, chemist and head of the EKFE of Laconia, will conduct a laboratory exercise for the general public on the preparation of soap from non-edible olive oils, utilising the cold saponification method. Participants will have the opportunity to experience firsthand a process that combines traditional know-how with a modern scientific approach, highlighting the second life of olive oil.
This specific educational programme, which has been implemented for several years at the Museum in the framework of the Foundation's collaboration with the National Council of Secondary Education of Laconia, is linked to the Chemistry curriculum of High School and aims to raise awareness of the value of recycling and the sustainable use of materials, for the economy and environmental protection.
