Public Central Library of Sparta
The Sparta Public Central Library was founded in 1972, following the donation of P. Poulitsas, and opened in 1973 after the Spartan Municipality donated 3,000 volumes of the then defunct Municipal Library. In 1981, the Public Library was converted into a Central Library, and today there are seven departments, which are as follows:
- Department of Laconian Bibliography
- Nikephoros Brettakos Archive
- Department for adults and children
- Public Information Center
- Department of Audiovisual Media
- Department of magazines and newspapers
- Mobile Units
At the Library, visitors have the opportunity to use computers while various workshops, conferences, events and exhibitions are organised. In 2011, the Sparta Municipal Central Library was honoured by the Academy of Athens with awards. According to the report of the Secretary-General of the Academy: "... it is the main cultural and educational factor of the capital of Laconia ...".
In the Department of Laconian Literature "Dikaios V. Vagiakos", visitors can find information about Laconia and Laconian writers through books, newspapers, magazines, digitised papers and more.
Nikiforos Brettakos' Poetry Archive has been hosted in the Library since 2000, in a specially designed space, according to the poet's wish. The primary purpose of the Library is to preserve his manuscripts, books, photographs, honours, as well as other evidence of the poet, to implement educational programs and to make use of his home in Ploumitsa.
Finally, the new TechLab Technology Lab was created in collaboration with the US Embassy of Athens. Technology, entrepreneurship, equality and the environment are supported by workshops, seminars and robotics training programmes.
